Lampeter-Strasburg score 2 TDs in the 4th quarter in 24-13 victory

Lampeter-Strasburg earns rematch with Bishop McDevitt

This game was billed by many experts to be a toss-up and for three plus quarters it was just that.   The #2 seed Lampeter-Strasburg Pioneers took the opening kickoff and drove methodically  downfield when the #3 seeded Bulldogs defense held and the Pioneers Matthew Wright kicked a 23 yard field goal.

The Bulldogs answered in the last minute of the quarter when a long drive of their own ended with a Mike Bell 5 yard touchdown run and the Chris Markel PAT made it 7-3 after the first quarter of play.

The Pioneers added the lone score in the second quarter on a Matt McCrudden 2 yard run the PAT made the halftime score 10-7 in favor of Lampeter-Strasburg.

The west York defense that had keyed the 5 game winning streak the Bulldogs rode coming into this game, gave up 178 first half yards but yielded only 10 points in the Pioneers 3 trips inside the twenty yard line.   A Brock Gladfelter interception in the end zone on a tipped pass ended a Pioneer scoring chance as the second quarter wound down.   “We were lucky to be only down three points,” Coach Ron Miller said, “very lucky.”

The Bulldogs had missed on some potential big passing plays throughout the night, when on a third and 9 QB Kaden Hepler rolled right and threw a backside screen to Brandon Kinneman who raced down the West York sideline for a 33 yard score and a 13-10 after a blocked PAT attempt.

On the next possession West York faced a fourth down and 4on the Pioneer 24 yard line, Hepler was stopped 1 yard short on an option run and the momentum of the game changed.   "That was the critical point.” Hepler said after the game.

The Pioneers took over on downs and put together their best drive of the second half with Dan Neff making the big play on a 33 yard run of right tackle for a touchdown and a 17-13 lead.

The Bulldogs were forced to punt on a fourth and 6 on the next possession from their own 24 yard, a fake punt gained only 3 yards and the Pioneers took over on the Bulldog 27 yard line.

“We had the ‘expect anything’ mentality”, said Pioneer Coach John Manion, “We really repped special teams hard yesterday.”

It paid off when the Pioneers score 5 plays later when 4 year starter Nate Shank found Jordan Groff from 15 yards out for the 24-13 win.

“They won 29 football games in three seasons,” Coach Miller said of the legacy of this senior class of 15 players, ”They won 3  (YAIAA Division II) titles.   They’ve played in two district semi-final games and they’ve been to districts every year.   They should be remembered as one of our great teams.”
